Please
Read this if nothing else!
Most of all check the Rules of the Search Engine you are
submitting too, if you ever have any doubts. This information
could be out dated as I type it now. Go to the source for the
most accurate information for the search engine you are
submitting to!
Please read this
note below:
<html>
<head>
All meta tags should be placed between these 2 head tags at the
top of your page
</head>
Keywords & Phrases
What is this & how do I know which ones are right?
<meta name="keywords"
content="This is where to place your
Keyword, keywords, Keyword Phrases, some say leave a space after the
comma, others say not, some say use single spaces, some say use plural,
etc... ">
Not all search engines
use keywords & phrases, but it needs to be there for some.
What is your content about & what product or service is your website
about? The first thing to do is go to the major search engines,
searching for different keywords & keyword phrases. Locate your
competitors.
Ok now you have found
out what your keywords & keyword phrases are you need to place them
in your Keyword Meta Tags in the head of your home page. These meta tags
can't be seen by your visitors. They are there for the search engine
spiders - crawlers & your competitors to view by right clicking on the web page &
viewing your source or some call it code. You can do the same. Believe
me they do
it!
NOTE: about Keywords & Phrases tags some say to not go over a 1,000
characters including spaces & commas. Others say not to go over 7
keywords & or 3 keyword phrases. This is where it will take
time to find out what works best for your website. I recommend not to repeat the same word over 3 times in the
Keyword Meta Tag. If you do any of this
excessively you could get banned for spamming search engines or get a
lower search engine ranking. Try
to use unique keywords or phrases for you website, common words Example:
Internet, Web hosting, Adult, Free, Computer, Sex, mp3 & etc... These
words are already used by millions, try to find specific Keywords
& Phrases pertaining to your website. You might consider placing
your company name & your geographic location to help locate you
specifically if you are mainly targeting your business locally. Just place this
in your Keyword meta tag.
Example: Of how Meta Tags are used
This website is about the lawn service business.
<html>
<head>
<title>Lawn Service Business
Information Resources</title>
<meta name="description"
content="lawn service information
resources will answer common questions about lawn equipment, helping you
in the lawn service business and a few short cuts to success">
<meta name="keywords"
content="lawn service, lawn care service
business, lawnservice, lawnmowers, lawn, landscaping, gardeners, power
equipment dealers, mowers, home owner, landscaper">
<meta name="robots"
content="index, follow">
</head>
"center"><font
face="Arial"
size="4"
color="#008000"><br>Lawn
Service Business Information Resources!</font></h1>
Description Meta Tags
<meta name="description"
content="This is where you place your
website description">
Now that you know what
your Keywords & Phrases are. You need to incorporate these into your
description & title tags like in the EXAMPLE ABOVE. You just got to find
the right stuff that works for your search engine placement. Notice in the
example that the Description & Title tag have the Keywords out
of the first Keyword Phrase? This is very important & a must to help you
get a higher listing. Try to make them the very first words in the
Description & Title Tag. You can if it pertains to you, place your Company Name &
Geographic location in the Description & Title meta tags, if you are
seeking Local Business. Do
not use "?" or "&" in your title tags at all. It
drives some search bots crazy! :-) Better to be safe than sorry. 150
characters is the maximum on some search engines, others 250 so play it
safe & stay with 150 maximum (20 - 25 words is plenty) in your title tag, that's
about the limit on some search engines & you need to make the most out of it. So use them the
most effective way possible, to achieve higher search engine ranking.
Title
Tag
<title>This is where your title goes</title>
Again: Now that you know what
your Keywords & Phrases are. The Title tag is not a meta tag but it
plays a very important part when combined with your Meta Tags. If you
notice I place the Title Tag in the very top just below the
<head> tag above all Meta Tags.
This I feel is a Must.
This tag is only seen in
the Browsers address window & is the title of the page you save in
your Favorite Places folder. So this is a very important Tag, BTW it's
also used as part of your listing on some search engine listings. Also
quite a few Search Bots & Spiders use this to help them index your web
page also. Very Important!
5 to 10 words (70
characters max) is enough to
place in the title tag & again use your most important keywords as
possible, in the very beginning if possible. Don't over do it! I look at mine in Preview in my HTML editor so
I can see what it looks like to the visitor. I want it to contain my most
important Key Words & or Phrases, making sure it's search engine
friendly & will be capable of catching my visitors eye either in the
search engine listing or in your favorites folder on your local computer!
H1 Header Tag in the body
of your page.
Look at the h1 style
above, the keyword phrase is in it to. Figure out a way to incorporate it
into the header, again gaining higher search engine placement. Some Search
Engines look for these H1, H2 html tags.
Content
of your Page, Remember "Content is KING"
This is the very first
words that you read starting at the top of your page, most search engines
like to see look at 250 - 300 words of content on a page. Try to start out
your first paragraph with your main keywords or phrases in there, at the
very beginning & at least
a Total of 3 to 5 times at least times on each page. But don't over do it. You
can get penalized for for that too!
File Size of your
page, determines your Load Time!
Another important thing to remember is keep the total size of your web
page under 50Kb this including all text & graphics. The average web
surfer is still only connecting at 28,800 & this means it would take
25 seconds to load a page of 50Kb. When going to a home page for the first
time people in most cases, just will not wait over about 20 to 30 seconds.
Think about your self surfing. Not everybody has 56Kb modem, DSL, Cable,
T1, T3 & etc... connections. They will click to go somewhere else
before waiting very long. So lets keep them at your home page & once you
get their attention, you can then push it a little.
Links
on Your Home Page
Make
sure you have plenty of links on your home page going to the rest of your
website & you might consider having a Contents link on your home page,
going to a page that has links to all the pages on your website. Try to
design your web site where once on the Home Page that you can
get to any page on that web site in just 2 clicks. It will make
a Big Difference.
Free
Web Hosting, Under Construction & etc...
Some
search engines will not list web sites hosted on free web hosting
accounts, web sites that say they are under construction, framed web
sites, websites that to much java, web sites that are mostly all graphics.
To Rank well you must have good Content! Content is KING!
Now
all of the above, Please!
This is all wasted unless
if you do not find a way to make it all work together. What I mean is you
have went to a lot of trouble of picking your Keywords & Phrases. So
make use of them by tying them all together with your Description tag,
Title tag, h1 header, Content page. It will make the difference between
night & day!
Please, again that not
all search engines use these Meta Tags!
Some search engines are reviewed by real people. But all of this is still considered
when reviewing a search engine. After you get your Meta Tags set up. That
there is still other things to be considered & one is, "CONTENT
IS KING." Content Counts!
Link Popularity helps in more
ways than one.
Some of the Search
Engines are giving websites a higher ranking because of the number of
links on other websites linking back to them. It would help your Link
Popularity quite a bit if you go to other websites that the content is
closely related to your web sites content & do a
link exchange with them. This kind of link exchange is best, just
concentrate on similar websites.
These Auto Submission Services submit your site to 1,000's & Even
100's of thousands of FFA - Link sites & sites similar
to these. If the web sites you are linked to do not have close to
the same content as yours, It does not Help you, it Hurts you.Be it Links Leaving your Web Site or Actual Content on your Site, Please
Remember that CONTENT is KING!
Now you say you want
Traffic, But Where's your Custom 404 Page?
If you don't have one of these Pages,
You Need it. Why?
Well several reasons, you removed or changed the URL of one of your Pages that
someone has already Book Marked. Somebody typed in the wrong URL, maybe one of
the Search Engines has one of the pages listed that you changed, removed or
renamed.
Custom 404 Error Page is Very Important, a Must Read
because...
If you have any traffic at all, by not having this
Custom 404 Error page, you could easily be losing up to 10% of your Traffic. Can you afford to
lose that much Traffic. I can't & I don't think you can either.
Do not do these, if you
want high Search Engine Placement?
Search Engines are a lot smarter now & they know what to look for.
-
Do
not excessively repeat keywords on your site.
-
Do
not try making keywords the same color as your background.
-
Do
not put repeated keywords at the top or bottom of your page.
-
Some
search engines only allow you to submit 1 URL per 24 hours.
-
Some
search engines only allow you to submit once every 30 or 60 Days.
-
Do
not submit your URL more than once every 30 days & 60 would be
safer.
-
Do
not use excessive graphics & rely on the graphics only, you need
content.
-
Do
not use Door Way Pages or Cloaking unless you know what you are doing.
-
Frames,
Flash, Java Script & Redirects requires more work for search engine
placement.
Do
not put keywords or phrases in your Meta Tags, that are not part of your
websites content such as "Free", "MP3" or
"SEX" unless your website is about that or contains content
pertaining to that. You might get a high listing for a while, but it won't
last. You'll get caught & that's not good!
Be
Prepare to be Dropped by some of the Search Engines if you are caught
doing any of the above, it is hard to have a decision reversed once you
are Dropped & also be prepared to purchase new domain names if it does
happen.
